What is the difference between UK and EU trademarks?

A UK trademark only provides protection for you in the UK (consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). There is no protection outside the UK. A UK trademark has been applied for at the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO).

A trademark submitted in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is called an EU trademark (formerly known as CTM (Community) trademark).

An EU trademark provides protection for you in the 28 member states of the EU, making it a very powerful trademark. The current EU countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Republic of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
