Which countries are included in the EU trademark registration?

The EU Trademark Office began to accept EU trademark applications on January 1, 1996. The protection period of an EU trademark is ten years and can be renewed, and the protection period for each renewal is ten years. Applicants for EU trademarks are not limited to nationals of EU member states. Nationals of other countries that have joined the Paris Convention and the World Intellectual Property Organization can also apply.


Europe is an important overseas market for China's foreign trade. If registration is carried out one by one in these countries, it will inevitably increase the registration time and economic cost. As long as an EU trademark is applied for and registered, the trademark can be used in all 28 member states of the EU. If more countries join the EU, the applied - for trademark can also be protected in the new member states. An EU trademark can include any mark that can be represented graphically, especially words, including personal names, patterns, letters, numbers, the shape of goods or the appearance of their packaging, as long as these marks can distinguish the use of one kind of goods or service from that of other kinds. Therefore, the following marks can be used for trademark registration:
Word marks including letters, numbers, or combinations of letters, numbers and words;
Graphic marks with or without words;
Colored graphic marks;
A single color or a combination of multiple colors;
Three - dimensional marks of EU trademarks;
Sound marks, etc.
